Summary

Understand how student health plans are assigned at Acadia University and whether you’re eligible to switch between domestic and international coverage.

Body

No — you cannot switch between the domestic and international student health plans unless your residency status officially changes. Here’s how it works:

  • 🏠 Domestic students are automatically enrolled in the ASU Health & Dental Plan

  • 🌍 International students are automatically enrolled in the ASU Medical & Dental Plan

  • 🔄 Switching between plans is not allowed unless you change your residency status (e.g. become a permanent resident or Canadian citizen)

  • 🧾 If you already have comparable private insurance, you may be eligible to opt out during the opt-out period — but this does not allow you to switch plans

To confirm your plan or ask about opt-out eligibility, contact tanya.comeau@acadiau.ca or visit the ASU Supports Office in the Student Union Building.

📘 Helpful Definitions:

  • Residency status: Whether you are considered a domestic or international student based on your citizenship or immigration status

  • Opt-out: The process of declining the student health plan if you have other coverage that meets university requirements

📝 Special Notes:

  • You can only opt out during the official opt-out period at the start of your academic year

  • Proof of alternative coverage is required to opt out

  • Once opted out, you cannot opt back in until the next policy year
