Can I change my health and dental plan after enrollment 🔹 Can I opt out of the student insurance mid-year 🔹 How do I update my coverage or add dependents 🔹 What if I lose my other insurance during the year

You can only make changes to your health and dental plan — such as opting out or adding dependents — during the designated opt-out/opt-in period at the beginning of each academic term.

After this window closes, mid-year changes are generally not allowed, unless you experience a significant life event, such as:

  • Losing coverage through a parent, spouse, or employer

  • Reaching the age limit for dependent coverage

  • Getting married or having a child

If this applies to you, reach out to the ASU Supports Office or the Student VIP team for help with documentation and next steps.

📘 Helpful Definitions:

  • Opt-out/opt-in period: A limited time at the start of each term when students can decline or modify their insurance coverage

  • Significant life event: A major change in personal circumstances that may affect your insurance needs

📝 Special Notes:

  • You must provide proof of the life event (e.g. termination letter, birth certificate)

  • If you opt out, you cannot opt back in until the next policy year unless you qualify for a mid-year exception

  • All requests must be submitted through the Student VIP portal
