Overview
Recent versions of macOS have introduced a new interface for connecting external displays. When connecting a newer MacBook or MacBook Air to a classroom data projector using an HDMI adapter or docking station, you may be prompted to choose how you would like to share your display.
This article explains the available display options and provides troubleshooting steps if the projector does not display your screen.
Note: These instructions apply to newer versions of macOS (including macOS Sequoia 15.2 and later). The appearance of menus may vary slightly depending on your macOS version.
Before You Begin
Before connecting to the classroom projector:
- Verify that your MacBook is running a supported version of macOS by selecting Apple Menu > About This Mac.
- Ensure you have the appropriate USB-C or Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter if your MacBook does not have a built-in HDMI port.
Connect Your MacBook
- Connect the classroom HDMI cable to your MacBook or compatible display adapter.
- Wait a few moments while macOS detects the external display.
- A window will appear asking how you want to share your screen.
Choose one of the following options.
Entire Screen (Mirror Display)
Select Entire Screen to display everything shown on your MacBook screen.
This is the recommended option for most classroom presentations, demonstrations, and lectures.
Window or App
Select Window or App to share only a specific application window.
This option is useful when:
- Presenting a PowerPoint while keeping notes private.
- Sharing a web browser without displaying your desktop.
- Demonstrating a single application.
Extended Display
Select Extended to use the projector as a second display.
This allows you to:
- Keep presenter notes on your MacBook.
- Display slides or other content on the projector.
- Move application windows between displays.
Change Display Options Later
If you wish to change display modes after connecting:
- Select the Screen Sharing or Displays icon from your Dock or menu bar (if available).
- Choose Choose Content.
- Select one of the available display modes:
- Entire Screen
- Window or App
- Extended Display
You can also manage display settings by opening:
System Settings > Displays
Troubleshooting
I don't receive the display prompt.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable.
- Verify that your HDMI adapter is fully connected.
- Open System Settings > Displays to see if the projector has already been detected.
- Restart the MacBook if the display is still not recognized.
The projector says "No Signal."
Check the following:
- The HDMI cable is securely connected.
- Your display adapter supports video output.
- The projector has finished powering on.
My MacBook detects the projector, but nothing is displayed.
Try the following:
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Switch between Mirror and Extended Display.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable.
- Restart the MacBook if necessary.
The image appears on the projector, but not on my MacBook.
Your MacBook may be using Extended Display mode.
To duplicate your screen:
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Select Mirror Displays or choose Entire Screen from the display options.
The projected image is blurry or cut off.
- Ensure the projector is set to its native resolution if possible.
- Disconnect and reconnect the display.
- Restart the presentation application.
- Try another HDMI cable or adapter if available.
Tips and Best Practices
- Connect your MacBook before opening your presentation whenever possible.
- Carry a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt HDMI adapter if your MacBook does not include an HDMI port.
- Test your connection a few minutes before class begins.
- If using Presenter View in PowerPoint or Keynote, select Extended Display.
