Overview
Microsoft Defender for Office 365 helps protect the Acadia University email environment by automatically identifying and isolating messages that may contain spam, phishing attempts, malware, or other potentially harmful content. Messages flagged by Microsoft Defender are placed in quarantine, where users can review and, when appropriate, release legitimate emails to their mailbox.
Title: What is Microsoft Defender Email Quarantine?
Audience: Faculty, Staff, Students, and Microsoft 365 email users
Microsoft Defender Email Quarantine is a security feature that temporarily holds suspicious emails to prevent harmful content from reaching your inbox. Users can review quarantined messages and, depending on the quarantine policy, may be allowed to release legitimate messages that were incorrectly identified as spam or phishing.
Release a Legitimate Email from Quarantine
Example: A vendor, colleague, or external organization sends an email that does not appear in your inbox because Microsoft Defender has quarantined it.
- Open the Microsoft Defender Quarantine portal:
- Sign in using your Microsoft 365 account.
- Review the list of quarantined messages.
- Locate the email you are expecting.
- Select the message to review its details.
- Verify that the sender and content are legitimate.
- Click Release message (or Release email) to deliver the email to your mailbox.
- Confirm the release when prompted.
Alternatively, you may be able to release a message directly from a Microsoft Defender quarantine notification email.
Tips to use it this way:
Tip 1: Always review the sender, subject, and email details before releasing a quarantined message.
Tip 2: Only release messages from trusted sources. If you are unsure about a message, contact the Service Desk before releasing it.
