Return to Campus - Device Health Check

Overview

Below are a few precautions recommended to help keep your computer and our networks safe and secure prior to your return to your workspace on campus.

Before you get started: 

  • If it at possible, please complete these steps prior to returning to campus. 
  • Please complete the steps, one at a time.  
  • The operating system update and the full virus and malware scan may take a while. You may notice your computer performance is slow while they are running. You may find it easier to start them right before lunch or before you are done work for the day. 

Remove work documents from your personal computer

  • If you are transitioning away from using your personal computer for work tasks, it is time to move any documents off of it and back to OneDrive (recommended) or as an alternative, your work computer.
  • Once you have confirmed the files have copied successfully to your normal work computer, please delete them from your personal device and empty the recycle/trash bin.
     

Remove unwanted software from your Acadia-issued computer

Review the software installed on your computer and remove any that are extraneous or unwanted.  Some things to keep in mind: 

  • When viewing your installed apps, look for things you don't recognize, as well as for extra antivirus software.
  • Acadia supports  "Windows Defender" as a virus scanner. If you find McAfee, AVG, Norton or any other antivirus/malware scanner, remove Them to ensure proper functioning of Windows Defender.
  • If you come across an app you are not sure about, as a first step, search the internet to see whether there is more available information to help deteremine next steps.
    • If you are unsure, please contact the Service Desk, or
    • Remove it using, using application uninstall.   

How to Uninstall an Application

Mac

  1. Open Finder > Go to 'Applications' folder > drag any unwanted apps to the Trash and then empty the Trash (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202235)

Windows 

  1.  Select the Start button at the bottom left of your screen > Begin typing 'Add or Remove' > Select on 'Add or Remove Programs' > Find unwanted software and un-install  (https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4028054/windows-10-repair-or-remove-programs)

Install Operating System Updates

Ensure you have installed Windows or Apple updates. 

Mac: Select the Apple icon at the top left of your screen > Software Update > Check for Updates

Windows: Select the 'Start' button at the bottom left of your screen > 'Gear' icon > Update & Security >  Check for Updates

Run a full Virus and Malware scan using Windows Defender

After you have updated your Windows computer, do a full virus and malware scan with Windows Defender.

  1. Select the 'Start' button at the bottom left of your screen > 'Gear' icon (Settings)

 

  1. Select Update & Security > Windows Security

 

3. Select Virus & Threat protectionScan Options

 

4. Choose Full Scan > Scan now
