Overview
Whether you’re studying on-campus or online through remote learning, your computer will be crucial. Now that some of your classes may involve online video, it’s more important than ever to have a fast, reliable computer.
Laptop Recommendations
You should have a Windows 10 or Apple laptop, purchased within the last 2 years, that meets these minimum system requirements:
- Intel i5 processor (or equivalent) ** Note M1/M2 processors are not compatible with some applications or Operating Systems.
- 8GB RAM
- 20 GB of available storage space after all applications are installed
- 256GB flash storage hard drive (SSD)
- Webcam (built in or external)
- Ability to connect external devices to external devices, as needed, including where necessary: webcam, microphone, headset and external storage device.
Please note: Chromebooks, Tablets (such as iPads) are not considered appropriate replacements for a laptop computer. They do not provide a robust operating system for campus printing and certain academic requirements. If you plan to purchase a device which do not meet the recommended devices, please verify with the Service Desk that the device will meet your needs.
Computer Peripherals
- Webcam: if one is not already integrated into your computer
- Headset with microphone for improved audio quality and to reduce echo while speaking during webinars.
- NB: if your computer has a good microphone earbuds may be used instead.
- Printer: Desktop printer for the printing of assignments. USB cord is required.
Acadia Technology Services provides warranty service for Dell and Apple laptops. Models that meet the minimum specifications can be ordered online through Acadia’s Tech Store. Tech Store purchases receive on-campus warranty repair, and the option to have your computer delivered to campus. Please note that Apple users may be required to purchase the Windows Operating system depending on their program.
Internet Access
The audio and video quality of an online class depends on several factors. A high quality video connection will require 1.5 Mbps/second. When more bandwidth is available, quality and usage will increase to deliver the best experience. Learn more about Technical Requirements for Success with Online Learning.
Specific Program Requirements
- Certain programs (Nutrition and Engineering) use software that require a Windows 10 Professional Operating System. Recently released Apple Macbook Airs have M1/M2 processors that are not compatible with Windows 10 or their course specific applications. At the moment, Macbook Pros are still compatible.
- Students taking courses in Nutrition and/or Engineering with require a 256GB storage capacity hard drive.
- A minimum of 256 GB storage is then required. Windows 10 is available from the Software Portal.
