Overview
Whether you’re studying on-campus or online through remote learning, your computer will be crucial. Now that some of your classes may involve online video, it’s more important than ever to have a fast, reliable computer. Chromebooks and mobile devices are limiting and are not recommended for school use unless accompanied by a Mac or PC laptop. They do not provide a robust operating system for campus printing and certain academic requirements.
Laptop Recommendations
You should have a Windows 11 or Apple (Mac) laptop, purchased within the last 2 years, that meets these minimum system requirements:
- Processor
- Intel i5 or equivalent (PC) , M Series processor (Mac)
- RAM
- Storage (Hard drive)
- 512GB flash storage (solid state)
- Operating System
- Windows 11 is currently the only version of Windows being supported
- Apple supports the three most recent versions of MacOS. The currently supported versions are: Tahoe (macOS 26), Sequoia (macOS 15), and Sequoia (macOS 14). To find out which version you are running, click here
- Please note: Running outdated or unsupported software is a security risk for you and others that are on the same network or in contact with you. Unsupported operating systems do not receive security patches so they are at risk of exploitation. Third-party software developers also stop supporting outdated operating systems which means you may experience issues with installation or operation of their software.
Computer Peripherals
- Webcam: if one is not already integrated into your computer
- Headset with microphone for improved audio quality and to reduce echo while speaking during webinars.
- NB: if your computer has a good microphone earbuds may be used instead.
Internet Access (if not on campus)
The audio and video quality of an online class depends on several factors. A high quality video connection will require 1.5 Mbps/second. When more bandwidth is available, quality and usage will increase to deliver the best experience.
Specific Program Requirements
- Certain programs (Nutrition and Engineering) use software that require a Windows 11 Professional Operating System. Recently released Apple Macbook Airs have M1/M2 processors that are not compatible with Windows 11 or their course specific applications.
