Cybersecurity for US Trips and International Travel

If you're planning travel to the United States, please take a moment to review this important cybersecurity travel advisory. With increased scrutiny at U.S. borders and the risk of data interception or device inspection, we urge all students, faculty, and staff to follow these updated digital safety guidelines.

These apply whether you're traveling for a conference, field work, study abroad, or internship.

Key Travel Cybersecurity Tips for U.S. Trips:

Prepare Your Devices Before You Go

  • Only bring what you truly need.
  • Back up important data, then remove sensitive information from your devices.
  • Ensure your laptop, phone, and tablet are fully updated, encrypted, and password-protected.
  • Only if required and approved - Install and test a FortiClient VPN before you leave so you can securely access Acadia services abroad.

Disable Face ID, Touch ID, or Other Biometrics

  • Before crossing the border, turn off fingerprint or facial recognition unlock features.
    • Why? U.S. border agents can legally compel you to use biometrics to unlock your phone — but they usually cannot force you to disclose a password or PIN.
  • Use a strong passcode instead to protect your personal and university data.

Expect Device Inspections at the Border

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers can search electronic devices without a warrant.
  • They may ask for passwords or access — and refusal could lead to your device being seized or entry delayed/denied.
  • Consider storing sensitive data securely in the cloud and accessing it after you cross the border, not before.

Be Cautious Online While Abroad

  • Avoid public Wi-Fi unless necessary. Always use your VPN when accessing Acadia systems.
  • Never plug into public USB charging stations — bring your own power brick and cables.
  • Don’t click on suspicious links or install unfamiliar apps while traveling — phishing attacks and spyware targeting travelers are on the rise.

Traveling for an Extended Stay?

  • For internships, research placements, or semesters abroad, ensure you practice ongoing digital hygiene: regular updates, secure backups, strong passwords, and secure access protocols.
