Overview
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is the practice of adding a second piece of verification to log into an account.
This article provides a step by step guide as to how to set up the Microsoft Authenticator App for Multi Factor Authentication:

Important: Before you get started
- Use two devices to complete these instructions.
- Your smartphone or tablet to download the authenticator app on (i.e. the one you'll be using for MFA)
- A computer or secondary device to follow the setup instructions (e.g. your Acadia laptop or desktop)
- Know your password for your smartphone or tablet's app store (Google's Play Store or Apple's App Store)
- When prompted for permissions for notification and access to the camera, ensure you click yes or approve.
Request MFA
1. Request that MFA Protection be added to your account.
2. Once you have received an email confirmation, continue with the Registration Steps.
Registration: Enrol your account in MFA
1. Open a web browser on your computer and navigate to https://aka.ms/mfasetup.
2. Enter Your Acadia University Email and click next
3. Enter Your Acadia University Password and login to the MFA Setup
4. When prompted for "More information required", Click Next
5. Download and Install Microsoft Authenticator App on your smartphone or tablet by finding it in your application store: iOS | Android | Windows
6. Launch the Microsoft Authenticator app. When prompted to allow permissions for notifications and access to the camera, make sure you click yes or approve.
7. Once the app has been installed on your smartphone or tablet, click Next.
8. Click Next
9. From within the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet, click the "add account" button and then scan the barcode presented to you on your computer screen. This will add your Acadia account to the Microsoft Authenticator application.
10. Click Next
11. Microsoft will now test your Authenticator setup to see if everything is working correctly with a testing approval.
12. Once it is received on your smartphone or tablet, press the "approve" to confirm the test.
13. Microsoft will confirm the approval test has been a success. Click Next.
Activation and Next Steps
- Visit the Microsoft 365 Portal.
- Sign In with your Acadia email address and password.
- Approve the login using your smartphone or tablet.
- You may be prompted with a "more information required" screen. Click Next.
- Follow any additional prompts on the login screen.
