Using MFA to Authenticate

Overview

This guide will outline the process of using MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) for logging into supported applications such as Office 365 and other connected resources.

Prior to using MFA, please make sure that you have successfully setup your MFA devices using provided instructions.

The primary MFA method setup for Acadia University accounts is typically the Microsoft Authenticator app. However, if the Approval notification is not answered within 30 seconds on your smartphone, the system will prompt you to use a secondary option such as a phone call or SMS text messaging.

Instructions are provided below for the following authentication methods:

  1. Push Notification using Microsoft Authenticator App
  2. One Time Passcode using Microsoft Authenticator App
  3. SMS Text Messaging using your cell phone
  4. Phone Call using your landline or cell phone

Authenticator App Push Notification

  1. Login to your desired application, such as Office 365 from the Acadia portal page

  2. After logging in, you will be redirected to a MFA authentication prompt, with the following message:

  3. A push notification will be sent to your smartphone. Push "Approve" in your Microsoft Authenticator app to complete your login process.

  4. Once your login has been approved on your smartphone, you will be redirected to the application and can proceed to use it as normal.

Using a One-time password code from the Authenticator App

If you are using the Microsoft Authenticator app, but you are not receiving a push notification, you can also use a one time passcode from this app to complete your login.

  1. Open your Microsoft Authenticator app and tap your Acadia University account, this will reveal the One-time password code.(Note the Timer next to the code indicating how long the code will be valid)

  1. On the "We didn't hear from you" screen click the link to "Enter a security code"

  2. Enter the One-time password code from your authenticator app and click the "Verify" button

  3. Once your login has been verified by Microsoft, you will be redirected to the application and can proceed to use it as normal.

Using SMS Text Messaging

  1. When prompted to approve your sign in request wait 30 Seconds until the "We didn't hear from you" screen appears and click the "get code a different way" link

  2. On the "Verify your Identity" screen select the Text option and an SMS text message will be sent to the number listed in your MFA preferences.  Again these preferences can be updated at any time by visiting https://aka.ms/setupmfa.
